“Don’t Just Start Building The Product, Start Talking About It Too.” – Dagobert, Twitter dominator

Story by Dagobert

Left a $100K dev job to bootstrap a startup with my wife. Then took it from $300 to $3,000/month, only with Twitter.

1. How and when did you make your first dollar online?

Back in 2006, I was still in high school and building websites for fun. I made one about the new French Idol season, where people could easily download videos of the top candidates. Then I put ads on it, and stuck them to the download links, so people would miss the link and click the ad instead 😂 Made about 1500 € like this.

The next year I decided to go industrial and built a website for all candidates, hoping to get even more revenue. But after a couple of weeks, the TV network sent me a letter from a lawyer asking me to stop. So I did 😅

2. How long did it take between the idea and this first dollar?

For my current startup Logology, it took 2 years.

First, we had to organize leaving our jobs to start building it.

Then we spent way too long trying to make the product as perfect as possible 🤦‍♂️

3. What best actionable advice would you give someone who wants to start TODAY?

Don’t just start building the product, start talking about it too.

My number one regret is not having started my Twitter account sooner. Because it takes time for people to know who you are and what you’re doing.

So the sooner you start doing it, the sooner you will get users. Even if you don’t have a product yet, start connecting with others and talking about it.

Then when you launch, you’ll have lots of people waiting for it, instead of just launching out of nowhere and hoping for a magical event to make you go viral.

4. What resources would you recommend to a beginner?

Learning about marketing is crucial, especially at the beginning.

I recommend the marketing playbook by Ana Bibikova. It’s packed full of insights yet very easy for beginners.
